About the Perche, Bellême, and the Relais Saint Louis
The Perche
The Perche was a province or county, an important one as a gateway to the West, with royal roads leading from Paris to Brittany and Lower Normandy. When Napolean created states, the Perche disappeared as a distinct region, being separated into three states, but re-emerged some twenty years ago as a Natural Regional Park.
The Perche is caracterised as an agriculural region with many forests, mansions, horses.
Bellême
While Bellême was at one time the administrative capital of the Perche – the Governer’s Mansion is across the street from the Relais Saint Louis – it is now considered its cultural capital. Bellême is extremely active, with 80 commerces, dozens of associations and many business and entertainment events.
